Pittsburgh’s Independence Day fireworks will go on tonight, delayed to approximately 10 p.m. after severe weather moved through the city and region, the City of Pittsburgh said.

Gates at Point State Park and the North Shore will reopen at 8:15 p.m., with music to follow, the city said in an update posted to social media at 8:04 p.m.

The city cautioned that schedules may change again if weather conditions worsen.

Earlier Saturday, the city advised guests to seek shelter after lightning was detected within 8 miles of the event location. In a 4:52 p.m. advisory, officials told attendees to move indoors if possible and avoid open areas.

The city designated shelter locations at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown and the United Steelworkers Building garage Downtown, and at Acrisure Stadium on the North Shore. This year’s celebration marks the 250th anniversary of American independence.
