Allegheny County health inspectors have posted a Consumer Alert at Prantl’s Bakery in Shadyside after a May 14 inspection uncovered a rodent infestation spanning the entire facility.
Inspector Joseph Mellinger documented droppings in more than two dozen locations — including on food contact surfaces, pastry boxes, paper to-go bags and inside the employee restroom. A decomposed rat was found near the basement furnace. The inspection was also triggered by a formal rodent complaint.
The violations are repeat offenses. The health department held an administrative conference with the bakery’s owner in February 2025 over recurring pest control failures. Management claimed weekly pest control service but could not provide documentation.
Inspectors also cited old food debris throughout the facility, soiled floors, wall gaps near the basement door and a cluttered basement flagged as pest harborage.
Prantl’s Bakery, at 5525 Walnut St., is not providing comment at this time.
The bakery has 10 days to correct the violations or face a closure order.
