Michael’s Pizza Bar, a fixture on Pittsburgh’s South Side since the 1980s, will permanently close March 28, according to a Facebook announcement posted by the business.

The neighborhood pizzeria, located on Sarah Street, was opened by Michael and Dee Glowacki. Over the years, it built a loyal following for its classic slices and creative specialty pies. Items such as the pierogi pizza, spaghetti pizza and rotating holiday-themed creations became a taste of home for residents of the South Side Flats and Slopes alike.

Ownership changed in late 2019, when Kevin Cox, co-founder of Bar Marco, and his sister, Mary Cox, purchased the business just before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Michael’s continued to operate with minimal changes. It remained a cozy, go-to spot for church and neighborhood groups after meetings.

No explanation has been given for the closure. In their message, staff wrote: “And we’re sad to say … our last day serving yinz will be March 28. We’re so grateful for all the good times we’ve had serving our community and look forward to seeing you a time or two (or 10) before we go!!”

Michael’s Pizza Bar will remain open through March 28. Longtime regulars and curious newcomers still have a chance to grab a slice and say goodbye to a neighborhood original.
