Penn Brewery’s Troy Hill property is headed to sheriff’s sale June 1, weeks after its owner filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
According to records posted by the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, three parcels at 800 Vinial St. in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood are scheduled for auction June 1. The listing, updated May 8, shows an opening bid of $2,720.09 and names First Commonwealth Bank as the creditor.
Brewery owner Stefan Nitsch announced in April that the company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, describing the move as a restructuring effort and saying the brewery would remain open.
In statements to local media, Nitsch said the sheriff’s sale was not expected to immediately affect brewery operations, though it could result in a new landlord. He said any future effort to remove the brewery from the property would require lease non-renewal and legal eviction proceedings.
Allegheny County property records show the Vinial Street property was transferred in March 2024 to Arkham Asylum LLC, an entity associated with Nitsch’s Arkham Realty. Arkham Asylum LLC is listed as a defendant in the sheriff’s sale filing.
Penn Brewery, which identifies itself as Pittsburgh’s oldest brewery, traces its roots to the Vinial Street site to 1848. The modern brewery was founded by Tom and Mary Beth Pastorius in 1986. Nitsch acquired the brand in 2022 and the building in 2024. It is widely regarded as Pittsburgh’s oldest brewery.
