The City of Pittsburgh activated five senior centers as warming stations Tuesday as the National Weather Service warned wind chills could plunge as low as minus 17 degrees across the metro area.

CitiParks announced Monday that five Healthy Active Living Senior Centers will serve as warming centers from 8 AM to 7 PM on Jan. 20, extending their typical operating hours to provide refuge from the cold.

The National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory effective from 9 PM Monday through noon Tuesday for portions of southwestern Pennsylvania, east central Ohio, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia.

The warming stations include the Beechview Healthy Active Living Community Center at 1555 Broadway Avenue, the Greenfield center at 745 Greenfield Avenue, the Homewood location at 7321 Frankstown Road, the Sheraden center at 720 Sherwood Avenue, and the South Side Market House facility at 12th and Bingham Streets.

These senior centers normally operate from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. All five locations were closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In addition to the warming centers, nine CitiParks recreation centers remain open to the public during regular weekday hours, also closed Monday for the holiday. These facilities include Ammon, Arlington, Brookline, Jefferson, Magee, Ormsby, Paulson, Warrington, and West Penn recreation centers, each with varying operating schedules.

Temperatures are expected to rise by the end of the week, according to forecasters. All Pittsburgh residents are welcome to use the warming centers and recreation facilities regardless of residence location within the city.
