I received the news of Charlie Kirk’s assassination just moments after telling a friend I was worried that today’s political climate had grown too dangerous. It’s still early, and much about what happened remains unclear. What is clear is that, in just the last three days, I’ve already seen people on both the left and the right vowing to attack one another. That cycle is not something I want to be part of.

I’ve decided to step back from political and investigative reporting for now because of this climate. I’d rather not add to the noise or endless talking points.

Over the past year, I’ve faced a sharp rise in legal threats, political pressure and even threats of violence. Too often, it’s over the smallest things. At times, journalism itself is treated as a reason to attack me. Groups become angry when I choose not to cover them. More and more, people demand that I publicly declare a position on Gaza or Trump.

The Reporter has always been a community news outlet. Since I took it over two years ago, it has operated without ads, memberships or foundation support. I cover the costs myself because, for me, documenting Pittsburgh’s history is a form of activism.

Sadly, Kirk’s death provides another historical moment for reflection.

In Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro was targeted in an arson attack in April. In Butler, President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt last year. And Jewish organizations, including Tree of Life, have faced yet another round of threats by mail.

I condemn all acts of political violence.

We need to build a different culture. Step back from social media posts and articles that thrive on fear and rage. Spend time with your family and friends. Take long walks and get to know your neighbors. Choose reconciliation over exile with those you disagree with.

I can’t control the culture of division, but I can choose what to cover.

For me, it’s time to step back from photographing every political rally and protest. Please don’t send tips for investigative stories either. From here, I’m going to focus on the positive. I hope, in doing so, I can strengthen kindness in my heart and encourage it in others.
