Market Square’s $15 million reconstruction remains on schedule to complete by April 2026, reintroducing downtown Pittsburgh’s signature public space for the NFL Draft that month.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership announced Monday that workers are installing new shared streetscape surfaces and drilling foundation caissons for a glass-and-steel pavilion. The north section is expected to reopen by late October or early November.

Construction has created challenges for surrounding businesses. Thirteen merchants have received grants through an event loss mitigation program after Market Square events were temporarily relocated. The partnership announced marketing support to help businesses maintain visibility during construction.

The renovation blends roadways and sidewalks into one continuous surface designed to prioritize pedestrians. Workers are modernizing electrical and water systems while incorporating salvaged cobblestones to preserve the square’s historic character.

“These new street surfaces and walkways are the foundation of a Market Square that will be safer, more accessible, and more welcoming,” Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership President Jeremy Waldrup said in a statement.

The glass pavilion will feature blue and green panels representing Pittsburgh’s rivers and anchor markets, performances and community gatherings. Market Square’s renovation is part of broader downtown revitalization efforts announced in 2024 by state and local leaders.
