The inbound Armstrong Tunnel closed today, while the outbound tunnel reopened to traffic. The changes are part of an ongoing $13.1 million rehabilitation project.
Allegheny County officials said the inbound lane is expected to remain closed until June. The outbound sidewalk will stay closed through at least September due to unrelated repairs to the pedestrian bridge above Forbes Avenue by Duquesne University.
The Armstrong Tunnel connects Second and Forbes avenues and carries more than 11,000 vehicles daily. Work includes concrete repairs, installation of fireproof wall panels, upgraded lighting and fire systems, and new pavement, curbs and signage.
Inbound traffic is being detoured via Second Avenue, Ross Street and Forbes Avenue. Pedestrians are following the same route until the sidewalk reopens.
