The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is seeking volunteers to join its 12th annual Lake Elizabeth cleanup event scheduled for April 10–12 at Allegheny Commons Park. Registration opened Monday for the event.

The three-day event, known as “What the Muck?”, will run from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day. Volunteers will remove organic material, including goose droppings, and other debris that accumulates in the lake throughout the year.

The Parks Conservancy is partnering with the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works and Allegheny CleanWays, a nonprofit focused on eliminating litter from Pittsburgh’s waterways and green spaces.

Previous cleanup efforts have removed approximately five tons of muck from the lake while providing mulch for 350 trees throughout the park. The event raises approximately $6,500 annually to support ongoing park maintenance.

Allegheny Commons Park has had several major improvement projects in recent years, including the restoration of the Patricia Rooney Memorial Fountain and the North Promenade project.

No experience is necessary for volunteers, though participants should prepare for wet, muddy conditions. Cleanup supplies, including protective equipment, will be provided.
