Local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts set a new record for popcorn sales in their 2006 fundraising drive, selling more than $102,000.
The amount was reported by Luella Broe, popcorn chairperson for the Steel City District, Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America. Council-wide, about $1 million was raised for Scouting.
An awards celebration was held at the Brentwood Civic Center to honor the top sellers. More than 130 boys and their families attended, and prizes worth more than $2,700 were handed out, including bicycles, Gameboy II, GameCubes, Penguins tickets and Wal-Mart and Toys R Us gift cards.
The Steel City District serves the communities of Allentown, Arlington, Baldwin, Beltzhoover, Brentwood, Carrick, Clairton, Duquesne, Hays, Homestead, Jefferson Hills, Knoxville, Large, Lincoln Place, Mt. Oliver, Mt. Washington, Munhall, Overbrook, Pleasant Hills, South Park, South Side, West Elizabeth, West Mifflin, Whitaker and Whitehall.
There is still time for boys ages 7-18 to sign up for scouting programs throughout the district by calling Mark Ratti Sr., District Chairman, at 412-851-2511.
